THE DATING SCAN Seeing your baby’s heartbeat for the first time is a moment of pure joy.   The early pregnancy ‘dating scan’ is used to confirm the estimated due date, diagnose twins (or more!), and to look for the possibility of miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy. It is best performed at 6 – 10 weeks following the last menstrual period.   At OGB, your doctor will perform a dating scan at your first appointment in pregnancy. A little message from Russell…. On 27th June 2022, with a tinge of sadness, but with a lot of pleasure and pride , I was there to care for my last patient giving birth. I witnessed my first birth on 27th August 1985 as a Med Student at the Queen Vic, and was totally absorbed in the wonder, intensity, drama and excitement of being there when a woman gives birth and meets her baby. Seeing a mother, and her baby’s eyes meet for the first time is a magical moment. I commenced my Obstetric life in 1989, and through mentorship and training from numerous GPs, midwives and Obstetricians, I felt great satisfaction in learning about pregnancy and birth, learning how to observe what is normal, and how to help when things are not. Those who supported and trained me in Obstetrics ,and work of midwives are legends in my life. Their names will mean nothing to some, but everything to many. Over many years, I have had the complete pleasure of working with so many skilled, dedicated and passionate people who care for women so well during wonderful, but sometimes difficult times. As I step away from Obstetric services, I feel so fortunate to have experienced this part of my professional life, and to have shared in so many incredible moments with women and families. Thank you to every person for placing their trust and faith in me to look after you. At this time, I feel pretty happy to be spending more time with Marg, who has been an incredible support in a chaotic life. I’ll enjoy seeing more of my family, and of course my grandson, and the two upcoming grand daughters! I do also look at the talented, passionate and skilled young OGB Specialists, and sort of wish I was them, embarking on such a fantastic career sharing experiences, working hard, and making a difference. I’ll looking forward to seeing patients, new and previous, as I continue caring for women and people, in my ongoing IVF, Endometriosis, and Advanced laparoscopic surgery service, along with all of the OGB team.
